Shelli’s 40th – Day 3

Day 3 Of The Birthday Celebrations

It being our last morning at the Belle Tout Lighthouse, we set an early alarm so that we could watch the sun come up from the top of the lighthouse.

Wrapped up, we went up to the top of the lighthouse and enjoyed the spectacular views over the cliffs and sea as the sun made its way into the sky. A truly wonderful thing to see.

Breakfast was as amazing as it was the day before and it wasn’t long before we were loading our bags into the car and head off homeward bound.

The original plan for the day was to go to Ditchling Beacon and admire the views. So, we punched in the postcode into the car’s sat nav and wound our way through the lovely countryside, only to find the car park closed as it was overflowing with people. I guess lots of people had the same idea as us, seeing as it was such a lovely day?

That idea scuppered, we headed off to Devil’s Dyke instead to see what it was all about.

It didn’t take too long to get to Saddlescombe Farm – where there was plenty of parking – and off we headed along some more of the South Downs Way over the southern rise of the dyke and to the The Devils Dyke pub for a drink.

We would have considered getting some lunch at the pub if it wasn’t for the fact that it was ridiculously busy. So, a pint each it was and little sit down before walking down into the dyke and back to the farm for an ice cream.

Much like the drive at the beginning of the Birthday weekend, we set the sat nav to take us home avoiding motorways, and what a pleasant drive it was. It still never ceases to amaze me how beautiful the countryside is in this little island of ours!

Along the country lanes we kept an eye out for a suitable pub to stop off and get some dinner; no way we wanted to get home and start cooking after such a relaxed weekend.

As luck would have it we came across the The Shoulder of Mutton pub in Hazeley Heath.

The sun was still shining and we sat outside on their patio and enjoyed a really really nice meal, which was just what we both needed as our bellies were beginning to feel a little bit empty before the lucky find.

Fed and watered we drove the final leg of our journey home.

What an amazing weekend! The Belle Tout Lighthouse was just the best place to stay and the scenery, food, drinks, well everything, was just the best!
