Summer Holiday 2020: Day 3

Lanercost Priory, Carlisle Castle & Cathedral, and Hadrian's Wall

Another busy day exploring to the west of where we were staying, taking in a priory, castle and cathedral, before heading back and walking out to Hadrian’s Wall again, all of us this time.

First stop for the day was Lanercost Priory, a well-preserved medieval monastic site founded by Robert de Vaux in 1169.

We all found the ruins really interesting, especially the east end as the ruins remain at their full height, which was pretty impressive, and the various tombs which remained in the ruins.

After looking around the ruins and cloisters we took a look round the church and graveyard before having our lunch at the camper; handy having the fridge in the camper for sure!

Lunch eaten we drove into Carlisle for a look round the castle and Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life. It took us quite a while to see everything in the castle and the museum, and we all had a great time.

From there we went across the road and headed into the town centre. On the way we went past the cathedral so we popped in to have a look round. While there we all lit a candle to remember our lost ones.

After that the girls did a bit of shopping and, as we were all getting rather hungry by that point, we navigated our way to Pizza Express and stuffed ourselves on some delicious pizzas before heading back to the campsite.

To finish the day off – after a bit of a rest at the campsite – we all went for a walk out to Hadrian’s Wall.

One of the main reasons for going back to Hadrian’s Wall was to [as best as we could] recreate the photo I took of myself when I reached Hadrian’s Wall back in 2010. It was a bit of an emotional moment in my LEJOG walk and a serious milestone in the journey, so why not? We found the spot and took in Milecastle 42 and did our best to take a photo that looked like the original one. Below you can see the before and after photos.

Photo taken the girls explored the wall a bit more before we headed down to Cawfield Quarry. We didn’t stay there long though as the midges decided to descend on us, so we headed back up the road to the campsite.
