Luxembourg: Day 1

Steve And Steps Don't Mix!

A day spent enjoying the sights and sounds of Luxembourg city that, sadly for Steve, came with far too many steps!

Breakfast cooked and eaten we hopped on a bus (love the free public transport!) and started our look round the city with a well-earned beer, ha! We sat in the sun by the Gëlle Fra war memorial and enjoyed a nice cold beer before heading up into the city centre, checking out the various squares, buildings, etc. including the Palais Grand-Ducal and St. Michael Church.

From there we picked up the Wenzel Wall Walk, heading down into the Grund district to enjoy a refreshing pint and some fries at Scott’s Pub. From there we walked along the Alzette river to Neumünster Abbey and then on to Zulu Clausen for another refreshing pint.

We headed back long the river to check out the weir, and then it was up to the Rue du Rham for a fantastic view over the valley from the old city wall. Steve wasn’t happy at this point (see the photos of him on the floor like a little kid complaining about the walking!) but he managed to pull himself together and we carried on along the wall walk to the base of the Viaduc Pulvermühle before stopping for another beer sat on the bank of the river, listening to some live music.

Refreshed once again we walked under the Passerelle bridge past the skate park, before making our way back up to the Gëlle Fra war memorial. More steps! Another not very happy Steve!

Before heading back to the campsite we had a really tasty meal at the Brasserie “Favorite”, a Georgian restaurant. None of us had eaten Georgian food before but I have to admit that it was really really nice.

Shelli had the Badrijani (Georgian eggplant rolls stuffed with walnut sauce) followed by Lobio (Georgian vegetarian stew with kidney beans and walnuts). Steve over did the garlic sauce by having Shrimp chkmeruli (Georgian style fried shrimp with creamy garlic sauce, served with croutons) followed by Chicken Chkmeruli (Georgian style chicken with creamy garlic sauce, served with white rice and stir-fried vegetables). I had Khinkali beef (Georgian dumplings filled with beef and herbs) followed by Lagman fried shrimp (homemade noodles with stir-fried vegetables and soy sauce).

All in all, a really great first day in Luxembourg city.
