Summer Holiday 2019: Day 6

Falls of Foyers And Loch Ness Shore

Having visited places I’d been to on my LEJOG walk, today was a day of new adventures for all of us as we headed off to the Falls of Foyer for a walk.

When I walked the length of Loch Ness I took the Great Glen Way along the north side of the loch. Falls of Foyers is on the south side of the loch so the drive there and the walk we had planned was literally new ground for all of us.

The walk and the falls was pretty stunning, even if a bit on the hilly side, and relaxing on the shore of Loch Ness for a bit – the kids skimming stones – was just wonderful, helped by some decent weather.

On the way back to Fort Augustus we pulled over to take in the views from Suidhe Viewpoint on General Wade’s Military Road (the B862), where we had an amazing view up and down the valley.

While the girls were off looking one way I spotted something familiar from my many miles walking up the country: the rain beginning to close in. I got the initial gust of cool air before I spotted the moving rainfall up the valley. I took a quick picture and made my way back to the camper to try and warn the girls it was coming. Sadly, I didn’t get there in time and the girls made a hasty retreat before getting too wet, as you can see from the photo I took. Hilarious!

We also pulled over at Loch Tarff so that I could jump out and take a few snaps. I’ve said it so many times, but the landscape in Scotland is just amazing!

We had one final stop for a few snaps overlooking Loch Ness and Fort Augustus before heading back for a well deserved dinner.

After dinner I took myself off out for a little stroll. Since arriving we’d head the water from a nearby waterfall but we couldn’t see it anywhere. It was marked on my GPS’ map so I headed up through the woods – no discernible path to be seen, just using my ears and heading in the general direction – climbing over fallen trees and dodging boggy bits. I found the little waterfall and was also greeted by a fantastic view over the hills in the distance. Well worth a little exploring.
