In these mad times we find ourselves in people with mental health problems have never been more in need of help, and with the NHS’ services at breaking point it’s charities like Dare 2 Express that try to fill in the gaps and give people the support they need. That’s why I’m trying to raise money for Dare 2 Express, and you can sponsor me using my Just Giving page.

Week 8

Day 31

Day 31, the start of a new year and back to this Virtual JOGLE running malarkey after a couple of well-needed weeks off to recuperate and enjoy the holiday season without any pressure to get more miles done.

The eagle-eyed of you may have spotted that today’s run wasn’t exactly long, it being only a single mile to get things going again. There’s good reason for this, and not just to make sure I got myself back into this running thing gently after some time off.

Having spotted Sean Conway’s Tweet about his 496 challenge for the month of January (https://twitter.com/Conway_Sean/status/1344637405098356739) to kick start his 2021, I thought it’d be an interesting way of easing myself back into my running after a couple of weeks off.

Now, I’m no superhuman or mega athlete, and the original 496 challenge calls for you to do the day’s date in miles: the 1st is 1 mile, the 2nd is 2 miles, and so on, completing a total of 496 miles over the course of the month. That’s mental, and not even Sean was up for that, choosing to do increments of 1km instead of 1 mile.

Even 1km increments would be too much – especially on those final days of the month – and having to do this around work and home life I didn’t really think it would be good trying to squeeze in 4 or more hours a day to hit the mileage for the day.

So, I came up with my own way of easing myself back into the running, with the aim of covering more miles in January than I’ve covered already during my Virtual JOGLE run (30 days of running so far and 169 miles run).

The plan is to start at 1 mile on the 1st and then add 1/2 a mile each day for the rest of the month. This would give me a longest run of 16 miles (which I will definitely be splitting into smaller runs throughout the day!), and a total monthly mileage of 263.5 miles!

That would be a huge boost to my overall distance covered on my JOGLE run without – I hope – completely ruining myself along the way. Only time will tell on that one I suppose?!

Day 32

Day 32 and day 2 of my January challenge, ticking off the day’s 1.5 miles without any bother. I’ll be honest, I’m glad I’m easing myself back into this running thing after the Christmas break.

After a stint running along the side of the A9 I turned off onto the nicer, smaller lanes for the final mile or so of today’s run, taking me close to the Tomatin Distillery, not that I drink whisky mind.
